新的世纪，不仅需要精通中国法律的人才，而且在法学的各个领域亟需能熟练使用他国语言与文化，熟悉世界主要法律体系和国际法律规则，积极参与国际交流，具备良好综合素质、创新精神和实践能力的高级复合型人才。北京外国语大学是教育部直属重点大学，北外法学院是我校向综合性研究型大学发展过程中创建的一个学院级教学科研实体，其目标是建设国内具有一定影响的、特色鲜明的复合型跨国法律人才培养基地和外向型法学研究基地。
北京外国语大学法律系于2001年 9月招收了第一届法学专业本科生，目前在校法学专业本科生188人。经过近四年的努力，北外法律系已经初具规模，并形成了培养复合型涉外法律人才的办学特色和稳健务实的办学风格。学院设本科法学专业，学生在校期间同时修读英语言文学学位。2006年，学院取得国际法专业硕士学位授予权，现面向全国招收硕士研究生，硕士研究生的教育采取与国外大学联合培养的模式。
学院现设公法与法学理论教研室、国际法与比较法教研室和私法教研室，下设“英美法研究中心”和“法律英语研究中心”。北京外国语大学与北京大学和美国康奈尔大学联办的“中美法律与政策联合研究中心”（joint center for china-us law and policy studies）也设在我院。
经过多年的探索和发展，北京外国语大学法学院已经探索出了一条较为成熟的“法律专业+英语专业八级”的复合型人才的培养模式，注重培养学生分析问题和解决问题的实际能力，并逐步成为国内涉外型、实用型法律人才培养的重镇。随着英美法研究中心、中美法律与政策研究中心等研究平台的搭建，不断引进优秀科研人材，北外法学院的科研能力总体上升较快，外向型的法学信息中心和研究中心已初具规模。

capable as highly able-minded professionals. beijing foreign studies university, being a major university directly under the ministry of education, is geared toward
such an end when establishing the law school in a comprehensive effort to build such platform, with fundamental significance and unique characteristics for training
foreign-oriented law students and international legal research organization.
the class of 2001 recruited the first law students in september of that year for undergraduate studies, and currently has a student body of 188. in four years, bfsu
law has become a full-scale law school and gradually built a reputation for training multi-purpose legal professionals.
the law school offers undergraduate courses, together with courses on english language and literature studies toward a b.a. degree. the school starts to offer
graduate degrees on international legal studies which will be open to prospective applicants nationwide. the graduate studies will be carried on by joint effort with
international legal educational entities.
the law school operates the faculty of international law and jurisprudence, the faculty of international and comparative legal studies, and the faculty of private
law, as well as a center of anglo-american legal studies. it also hosts the american law and policies research center, which is jointly operated by bfsu, peking
university, and cornell university.
after several years of probe and development, the bfsu law school has established a successful mode of training for “law plus pem8” with an emphasis on
building the students’ ability for analyzing and solving practical problems. with the establishment of its research centers such as the anglo-american law and policy
research center, and other research facilities, the bfsu law has become such a platform as it will be sure to attract more legal scholars.
